The Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources has expressed support for the government to prioritize the rehabilitation of the railway line and the establishment of the proposed refinery to boost production.
This was made known during a working visit coordinated by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
Commitment to host communities
Management of GMC highlighted several initiatives aimed at supporting host communities, particularly in employment, education, and skills development. Currently, the company provides:
- 900 direct jobs for Ghanaians.
- 320 jobs through third-party contractors.
- An employment policy that reserves 60% of all recruitment for host communities.
Beyond job creation, the company runs a community apprenticeship program to equip local youth with employable skills, as well as a graduate training program that offers career opportunities for university graduates.
In education, the company continues to invest heavily in scholarships. This year alone, 80 students from host communities have been awarded scholarships to further their studies at various levels.
The company has also invested in infrastructure, including schools, roads, and other community projects.
Management emphasized that alongside these initiatives, it has consistently honored all statutory obligations to the Government of Ghana, contributing significantly to national revenue.
Call for strategic projects
GMC appealed to the committee to support the rehabilitation of the railway line and the refinery project, emphasizing that both would enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and create broader economic opportunities.
According to the company, an upgraded railway line would increase revenue to the government, reduce transportation costs, and significantly decrease road accidents— a major safety concern in mining.
The Ghana Chamber of Mines, which coordinated the visit, also backed the call and urged the government to prioritize the railway and refinery proposals, noting that they are essential to sustaining the mining sector.
Committee’s response
Members of the committee commended the company for its commitment to corporate social responsibility and adherence to regulatory requirements. They assured management of the committee’s readiness to engage stakeholders on the proposals raised, which are intended to strengthen Ghana’s mining industry and support sustainable development.
