PARLIAMENTARY SELECT COMMITTEE ON EMPLOYMENT PAY A WORKING VISIT TO GMC

The parliamentary select committee on Employment has paid a working visit to Ghana Manganese Company Ltd, to familiarize itself with the company’s operations and assess its contributions to employment generation, local content, and community development.

The visit formed part of the committee’s nationwide oversight mandate to engage key state and private institutions that significantly impact job creation and economic growth.

The delegation sought to:

  • Understand GMC’s employment structure and working conditions.
  • Assess the impact of GMC’s operations on host communities.
  • Identify areas where policy support could enhance local job creation and sustainable mining practices.

The GMC management team warmly welcomed the Committee and provided a detailed presentation on the company’s operations, workforce, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Key Highlights included:

  • Employment impact: GMC directly employs over 900 Ghanaians and supports over 300 more indirectly through contractors.
    • Skilled Development: The company invests in continuous training and apprenticeship programs to build local capacity and technical expertise in mining through its Community Apprenticeship and Graduate Training program
    • Community Support: GMC continues to fund various CSR projects in education, health, and infrastructure within its catchment communities, including scholarships, school building projects, and water projects.

    The committee commended GMC for its sustained contribution to national development and its effort to maintain employment levels despite global market challenges.

    The chairperson of the Committee reiterated Parliament’s commitment to supporting policies that promote decent work, fair wages, and responsible mining practices nationwide.
