Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) has reached a significant milestone with the successful commissioning of its first advanced radar monitoring system, which is now fully operational and running remotely. This achievement marks a major step forward in enhancing real-time slope stability monitoring and strengthening risk management across the mine.
A Breakthrough in Mine Safety and Operational Excellence
The newly deployed radar represents a critical investment in modern technology that provides early detection of slope failures, reduces operational disruptions, and protects people and equipment.
What makes this milestone exceptional is the strong collaboration between multiple departments across GMC:
- The IT Department enabled seamless remote access, system integration, and the technical foundation required for the radar to function efficiently.
- Supply Chain, Mine Operations, and Engineering Teams– provided hands-on support throughout the deployment process, ensuring the installation and commissioning were completed smoothly and safely.
- Mine Operations & Maintenance provided critical operational and technical support, including preparing stable platforms, optimizing access routes, and positioning equipment to ensure the radar was safely and effectively deployed.
- Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) ensured full compliance with safety protocols and environmental standards, conducted risk assessments, to guarantee that all installation activities were carried out safely and responsibly.
Enhancing Real-Time Monitoring and Decision-Making
GMC has integrated the radar system with an automated alert platform accessible to selected supervisors and managers. This allows:
- Faster response times
- Early identification of slope stability issues
- more proactive and informed decision-making
- continuous monitoring of high-risk areas
The first radar system is currently focused on monitoring the West Wall of Pit C, helping identify potential hazards early enough to avoid equipment loss, safeguard lives, and prevent costly operational interruptions.
A Commitment to Safety, Productivity, and Innovation
The introduction of this radar marks GMC’s strong commitment to safety, innovation, and improved productivity. It underscores the company’s dedication to adopting modern technology to enhance operations and support sustainable mining.
This deployment is only the beginning. GMC has already begun planning for the next phase, which includes acquiring an additional radar to monitor the eastern walls. Once complete, the mine will have more enhanced radar coverage, ensuring superior situational awareness and comprehensive risk mitigation.
