Job Description
1.0 Geotechnical and Hydrological functional activities
- Analyze and provide recommendations for slope development and failures management using available analytical and numerical techniques
- Install slope monitoring systems like prisms, radars, extensometers, clinometers, piezometers, and the like.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data from these monitoring systems and present the result parameters for use in current and future pit, waste dumps and other facilities on the mine.
- Provide Geotechnical and Hydrological inputs for planning and operational purposes
- Model structures and geotechnical domains using 3D mining softwares such as Surpac or micromine
- Lead construction of quality control and quality assurance activities (QA/QC) for the construction of key Geotechnical and Hydrological infrastructural aspects on the mine.
- Monitor and advice on compliance with mine design parameters on an ongoing basis to achieve highly profitable mining practices.
- Provide Geotechnical and Hydrological analysis on various structural facilities in the mining area such as stockpiles, rompad, tailings dam and so on
- Conduct geotechnical drilling & logging, pit wall mapping campaigns, and laboratory tests to anticipate any changes which may affect the geotechnical features of the mining area.
- Be responsible for establishing and maintaining systems and processes to ensure compliance with the GMC Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP), Ground Control Standards, and the Fatality Risk management processes.
- Establish, implement, document, and maintain standards, systems, and processes to ensure ongoing updates to an integrated mine geotechnical model, containing interpretations of the geotechnical, hydrogeological, rock mass properties and behaviour data.
- Establish, implement, document, and maintain standards, systems and procedures for data collection, data management, data analysis, excavation design and mine design validation.
- Ensure compliance to the Health, Safety and Environmental standards on the mine site and government regulatory body
- Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his / her supervision.
- Comply with all H&S, Loss Prevention, Asset Management, Environment and Social Responsibility requirements under GMC’s Integrated Management System or as applicable and GMC vision and values.
- Conduct and complete incident / accident investigations and take corrective action to prevent injury and / or re-occurrence.
- Oversee implementation of job and safety training programs for junior
- Ensure all required daily, weekly, monthly, bi-annual and annual reports are completed and distributed on time.
- Assist in generating the sectional operating and capital budgets for annual business planning.
- Assist in generating capital requests such as Applications for Expenditure (AFE’s) and justification documentation.
- Document all geotechnical and hydrological modelling parameters relevant to the generation of reserves and resources and annual business plans.
Qualification & Experience
Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):
- Minimum requirement of First Bachelors’ Degree in Geotechnical/Mining/Geological Engineering.
- Knowledge of mining software packages such as Surpac or similar GMPs
- Valid driver’s license at least class B required
- Advanced knowledge of work management process
- Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience in the mining industry which includes large scale open pit operations required or equivalent combination of training and experience are necessary.
- At least three (3) years of supervisory experience – leading teams and having direct reports
- Knowledge and ability to use geotechnical and hydrological softwares such as RocScience (Dips, Slides, Phase, Rocfall)
- Relevant experience in slope management and ground water
- Strong geotechnical data collection skills and understanding of principles of geotechnical monitoring tools and systems such as total station robotics and alert monitoring system
- Good geotechnical design and analytical abilities
- Proficient user of industry-standard geotechnical, rock mechanics and mining software
- Knowledge of geotechnical and Hydrological Modeling and Interpretation.
- Effective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literacy skills – MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Sound planning, organizing and prioritizing skills.
